Who was Don Bosco?

John Bosco, commonly known as Don Bosco, was born on August 16, 1815, in Becchi, Italy. Orphaned at the age of two after his father’s death, he faced numerous challenges but persevered to become a priest in 1841. Devoted to the welfare of impoverished youth, Don Bosco dedicated his life to providing food, shelter, and education to boys in need. His innovative approach led to the establishment of technical schools and hostels, promoting vocational training alongside academic education.

In 1859, he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco, a religious congregation focused on youth education and empowerment, which expanded globally. His educational philosophy, known as the “Preventive System,” emphasized kindness and reason over punishment. Don Bosco passed away on January 31, 1888, leaving a legacy that continues today through the Salesian community, which serves millions of young people worldwide. He was canonized by Pope Pius XI on April 1, 1934.
